    4-H Haiti Projects

On our visit to Haiti in June we had the opportunity to go to see the progress that the seven 4H Clubs in the Mirebalais area had made on the projects they started with their $150 US Grants they received in January of 2006. We were MOST favorably impressed!

    1. Two clubs "capped" mountain springs and built covered cisterns over them to provide clean water for their community. Each cistern has a caretaker that sees to it hat the water is tested and has chlorine added at intervals designated by the Water Dept. in Mirebalais.
    2. One has beautiful gardening projects on the flat top of the mountain in Saut de Eau. They are raising 5 kinds of fruit tree seedlings and 2 trees for construction. In addition they have plots of vegetable plants for sale to the community. The project will thus be perpetuated.
    3. One has built a community latrine on a busy stretch of road that leads to Mirebalais.
    4. One restored a building and turned it into a school. Ne roof, benches, blackboard, desk, windows and paint job for 20 students.
    5. One built a public fountain with two faucets. The caretaker lives right there and monitors the use. It is open 6 hours twice a day.
    6. One fixed a road (about 2 blocks) that was easily flooded when it rained and became impassable, especially to vehicles. It took 3 truck loads of rocks and 10 of sand which made the road solid & safe for travel (even for donkeys!)

All of the clubs called on volunteers from the community to help provide the labor.

With a $150 US 4H grant, seedlings of mango trees and bananas were grown for distribution to families in the community. Latrine built with the Destinville Club's Grant on the busy, busy pedestrian road to Mirebalais. "Don" means provided by (donated)
Sarrazin 4H Club purchased a sewing machine with their VIP $150 US grant. The result? Uniforms for the members - what an accomplishment!
