Less than half of Haiti's school age children attend classes, primarily because in most areas public education is not readily available, and the cost of private education is far more than their parents can afford. Currently to educate one child takes almost ½ of a family's yearly income. VIP's efforts have made it possible for families to educate their children. Through contributions and monies raised from a variety of projects, VIP can offer more Haitian children the chance to receive an elementary education, and take that first big step towards improving their lives.
VIP does not stop there. In the area of vocational education, VIP is actively seeking volunteers to teach classes in various trades for Haitians, so they can become productive and self-sustaining members of their society. To that end, VIP has obtained typewriters for secretarial classes, sewing machines for the 4-H projects.
Ventures In People (VIP) feels that the hope for the future of Haiti lies in its children. This is why we offer a program whereby people can educate a child in Haiti for one school year for $135. What this amount of money provides for a student is tuition, books and uniform for the year.
The student education program funds the salary of a teacher who teaches English to the 4th & 5th grade students.
As a new water quality initiative, VIP has provided 25 "point of use" water filtration systems for use in Mirebalais schools. VIP's plan for the next phase is to provide an additional 100 of these systems in the schools n 2009.
Ventures In People supports a local education coordinator in Mirebalais, Louis Tenior Guerrier, who works with VIP's chairpersons, and the schools as well as the student's family.
His responsibility is working with a committee of three others to select for the program the most needy students who desire to go to school. He takes care of the placement of the students in the schools, makes sure each student receives books and a uniform and takes care of providing the schools with the necessary tuition. He monitors students' progress and assists the VIP volunteers with taking pictures of all of the students. His salary is paid by the Ventures In People Foundation - none of the $135 given for a child sponsorship is used for Louis' support.
Louis was born in Port Au Prince in 1973 but grew up in Mirebalais. He went to elementary school at St. Pierre where several of our students attend. He attended Lycee (High School) National school and began at Louis Mercier University in Port Au Prince in 1998 gave up after the death of his uncle who was a senator. He has since moved back to Mirebalais. He knows how important education is for Haiti's children and is enthusiastically helping VIP with their student education program.
We invite you to help us to help the children of Haiti by sponsoring a child. Your donation of $135 supports a student for the entire year. Won't you please help us change a generation as well as a country by educating its youth?
If you plan for a year... plant corn.
If you plan for a decade... plant a tree.
If you plan for a century... plant an idea and educate a child!!
