The lack of sanitary drinking water is one of Haiti's biggest problems. Most Haitians must rely on rainwater, or water taken from polluted streams that must be boiled before it can be used, for their needs. Others may walk 5 miles or more to obtain good, clean drinking water from drilled wells. VIP helps in this area and needs your donations to support the maintenance of these wells.
To that end, VIP has initiated a point of use water filtration system for use in schools in the student education program in Mirebalais. The plan is to continue providing the systems in each classroom.
In the Mirebalais area, VIP dug wells with the help of Rotary International Grants, 35 of them, covering a 150-square mile area, and within months the condition of its people having access to these wells was markedly improved. Maintenance is a constant need as is the need for additional wells. With financial help from VIP 4-H grants several 4-H clubs tapped mountain springs - built covered cisterns - and store water for use in their extended communities.
As part of VIP's mission statement, locally trained specialists are used to monitor the use of the wells as well as seeing to the needed repairs for this VIP project. This much needed person, or persons, provide a service to the communities as well as the jobs VIP is providing for the local economy. Donations for parts, maintenance and transportation and salaries for these wells are always needed. Won't you please help?
